A Holy Land Pilgrimage Packing List: Your Essential Guide

Holy Land Pilgrimage Packing List: What to Bring on Your Journey

August 21, 2025

Holy Land Pilgrimage Packing List & Visa Essentials - Elbow Holy Land ToursSo you’ve booked your ticket and are preparing to walk the very ground where Jesus walked. A pilgrimage to the Holy Land is a once-in-a-lifetime spiritual journey, and preparing for it properly is key to a comfortable and meaningful experience. Beyond your passport and tickets, what should you pack?

This comprehensive packing list is designed to help you prepare for every aspect of your journey, ensuring you have everything you need for both the practical and spiritual parts of your trip.

1. Clothing: The Cornerstone of Your Comfort

The Holy Land experiences diverse climates, and you will be visiting both bustling cities and ancient, dusty sites. Modesty is also a key consideration, as many sacred sites require shoulders and knees to be covered.

  • Comfortable, Broken-in Shoes: This is the most important item on your list. You will be walking on uneven cobblestones, ancient dirt paths, and concrete. Bring two pairs of comfortable walking shoes to alternate between.
  • Lightweight, Breathable Fabrics: Pack comfortable pants, skirts, and blouses. Linen and cotton are excellent choices for warm weather.
  • Modest Attire: Both men and women will need to cover their shoulders and knees for visits to some churches and other holy sites. Pack several long skirts or lightweight pants and blouses or t-shirts. A scarf or shawl for women is an easy way to cover up when entering a sacred place.
  • A Light Jacket or Sweater: Even in the summer, evenings can be cool, especially in Jerusalem.
  • A Hat and Sunglasses: Sun protection is essential, particularly for sunny days at sites like the Mount of Olives or the Sea of Galilee.
  • Swimsuit: If your tour includes a visit to the Dead Sea or a hotel with a pool, you’ll need one.  Some people also bring along flip-flops (or water shoes) as the salt on the sea bed can be very rough and difficult to walk on.

2. Health & Wellness Essentials

Don’t let a minor ailment distract you from your spiritual journey. A small first-aid kit can be a lifesaver.

  • Prescription Medications: Be sure to pack a sufficient supply for your entire trip in your carry-on luggage.
  • Over-the-Counter Medicine: Pain relievers, motion sickness tablets, anti-diarrhea medicine, and allergy pills are always good to have on hand.
  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the strong sun.
  • Hand Sanitizer and Wet Wipes: These are invaluable for quick clean-ups, especially after a meal or while exploring a bustling market.
  • Small First-Aid Kit: Include band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and blister pads.

3. Technology & Documentation

While a pilgrimage is a time to disconnect, some technology is necessary to stay on track and capture the moment.

  • Passport, Visa & Tickets: The absolute essentials. Keep them in a secure, accessible place.
  • Travel Adapters: Israel uses Type H and C plugs. You will need an adapter for your electronics.
  • Camera: To capture the incredible sights and memories.
  • NEW: Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA-IL): As of January 1, 2025, an approved ETA-IL is required for all travelers from visa-exempt countries before their departure for Israel. This new electronic travel authorization is valid for two years and allows for multiple entries. It is essential to apply online at least 72 hours before your trip. You can complete your application on the official government website: https://israel-entry.piba.gov.il/

4. Spiritual & Personal Items

These items are personal to your spiritual journey and will enhance your experience.

  • Your Bible: Reading the scriptures on location in the Holy Land is a truly transformative experience.
  • Journal and Pen: Use this to record your thoughts, prayers, and reflections as you travel.
  • A Small Day Bag or Backpack: To carry your water, camera, and other essentials during your daily excursions.

By packing thoughtfully, you can focus on the profound experience of walking in the footsteps of Jesus, rather than worrying about the small details. Ready to start your journey?
